This course is designed to provide an introduction to the practice of transactional music law. The classroom experience will include a presentation of the subject matter through lectures, discussions, and class participation. Students will learn about copyright and trademark law as they relate to music and how intellectual property rights are exploited through the music publishing and recording industries. The course will introduce the leadership and support roles of various entities in the music industry (producers, managers, agents, etc.) and how musicians work with them. After the basics have been covered, students will explore the types of contracts between musicians and others in the music industry and the areas that are frequently the focus of negotiations. By the end of the second week, participants in this course should know the basics of what music law is, how it is applied in the practice of transactional law with clients in the music industry, and have an understanding of the latest music industry trends and legal developments.
