Pierce Law unveiled its new courtroom at an open house today. Judges, attorneys, court officials and other members of the New Hampshire legal community saw a demonstration of the $352,000 courtroom's up-to-the-minute technology in a simulation by students Amy Christensen and Tyler Obenauf with Prof. Chuck Temple acting as judge. Christensen and Obenauf re-enacted their courtroom appearances in actual recent court cases (with names changed) as the proceedings were captured on audio and video.
The courtoom was outfitted by Single Source Group. Its ForTheRecord software is found in 22,000 courts globally, including Old Bailey and the World Court at the Hague. Pierce Law is the first school in the world to incorporate it into academics.
The courtroom, located on the first floor where the Offices of Career Planning and Academic Success had been, replaces a smaller courtroom on the third floor. The larger footprint accommodates a panel of judges at the bench, features a jury box with retractable flat screens for display of evidence, and includes a separate room for judges' chambers or jury deliberation. Not only do these elements enable students to gain practical training, but they also are necessary for New Hampshire courts to hold sessions on site.
The courtroom project was part of a large-scale renovation of the law center developed by DC Designs and implemented by Milestone Engineering and Construction.
