Sophie M. Sparrow is a professor of law and the former director of legal skills (1998-2008). Sparrow focuses her work on the scholarship of teaching and learning, and she is a consultant to the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning as a well as a member of its Advisory Committee.
A graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe College and Harvard Law School, Sparrow is a co-author of Techniques for Teaching Law 2 (2011), Teaching Law by Design for Adjuncts (2010), Teaching Law by Design (2009), and The Lawyer as Supervisor, Manager & Motivator (2000). She has conducted more than 70 workshops and presentations on teaching, professionalism, assessment, and writing to professors, judges, and lawyers at AALS Meetings, the Institute for Law School Teaching, and the Legal Writing Institute’s Biennial Conference, among others.
In 2004, she won the Inaugural Award for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching Professionalism, and in the spring of 2012, she will be a Fulbright Scholar teaching law at the National Law University in Jodhpur, India. She previously helped design New Hampshire’s alternative to the bar exam, the Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program, and served as one of the founding members of Phoenix School of Law. She learned about the transformative strategy of team-based learning a few years ago, now uses it in her Torts, Remedies, and Writing for Practice courses.
To her teaching, Professor Sparrow brings her experience practicing law, directing the UNH School of Law's Career Services Center and teaching students ages 5 to 50. Before joining the former Pierce Law in 1991, she worked as a staff attorney for New Hampshire Legal Assistance, representing very low-income clients and as an associate with a New Hampshire law firm.
Her two best teachers are her children.
