Children & The Law

This course provides students with an overview of an array of issues involving children, their parents and society. Topics will include a variety of subjects such areas as child support; child custody; and children in the legal system because of abuse, neglect or delinquency. Additional topics are a juvenile's right to an abortion; the right to obtain medical care; bullying; and use of the internet at home and its impact at school; the death penalty and life in prison for minors. The class will also discuss parent's rights towards their children and when the state has right to intervene in that relationship.



Class time will be used for lecture and discussion regarding text materials. The course is designed to cover the law on a national scope utilizing federal and state cases and federal statutes that impact children and parents.



We shall use a basic children and the law text. Classroom attendance and participation are required.
