Theater Law

Theatre Law is a unique discussion of Law, Culture and creativity. The Law itself is created by the nexus of copyright law, tort law, labour law and contract law. Historically, government has always "controlled" theatre's creation and content. Today's law continues to do so. It is the Law that decides who is the "creator". It is the law that controls the "business of theatre". It is the law that determines the working conditions in which the theatre happens. This course will explore and examine many of the issues and situations which law seeks to resolve in the American theatre. The student will be exposed to the history of a fascinating world that is both abstract and practical and roils with legal activity. At the conclusion of the course the student will be able to quickly identify the issue at hand. The student will be able to identify the discipline of law to employ against the issue. The student will then be able to prepare an appropriate argument to represent the client. The student will be able to read and write an appropriate contract addressing the client's concerns within the theatre context.
