Live Event Web Streaming: What is it and how can it help me?

The UNH Law Multimedia Department offers live streaming of special events and presentations, using the service Ustream.tv.  By web streaming, it is meant that a camera and microphone are set up to a computer that puts the video and audio in realtime on a web page for anyone in the world to see.  Think of it as a Skype service that only one side can show video and audio, but a limitless number of people can view it.  This enables you to expand your audience to those who would be unable to view it due to distance from the event or expand your audience by offering a solution that can be seen on any computer and some mobile devices.  Also, due to time constraints on video services like YouTube.com, you can show special events and presentations that may range from only a half hour to several hours at a time.

This service is not to be confused with distance learning or video conferencing.  The purpose of this service is to offer greater outreach for special events that would interest the general public or a specific national or international audience.  Appropriateness of streaming will be determined by the Computer Services Technician and Media Producer and his supervisors.

Ustream.tv also offers a chat room where anyone who is watching can create a log on and type in what they think about what is being streamed and can submit questions for the presenter.  This chat room can be moderated so users who abuse the room can be removed and inappropriate comments can be removed.

Please keep in mind that only one stream can be done at a time and this service does require time to organize, so contact the multimedia department ASAP with your request to stream.

Also, remember that it is a violation of copyright law to broadcast any audio/visual material that holds a copyright.  Any presentations that contain copyrighted material are subject to being denied streaming unless written permission is obtained from the copyright holder.

UNH Law has a Ustream channel at http://law.unh.edu/live
