Academic Success

Helping you take charge of your legal education

The goal of the Academic Success Program (ASP) is for students to cultivate the essential skills necessary to excel in law school, on the bar exam, and in legal practice. We are here to facilitate your learning about how you learn best and to help you apply those insights to your studies.

"We all learn differently. Learning about how you learn best prepares you to flourish in the variety of settings you will be in as a law student and a lawyer, from getting ready for class to taking exams to sitting for the bar exam to answering clients’ questions."

How the Academic Success Program (ASP) can help you

1L Workshops

ASP offers weekly workshops for all 1Ls to build skills essential for law school success, such as:

  • Active reading
  • Case briefing
  • Preparing for exams
  • Getting ready for the spring Preliminary Bar Exam

Attendance is voluntary, and no advance sign-up is necessary. Further details available on the ASP 1L Work TWEN site.

Work with upper level students

ASP offers group instruction on learning skills for all upper level students in two main ways:

  • Visits to some doctrinal classes
  • The development of online learning skills modules that students can do on their own time.  These modules are designed to strengthen students’ skills necessary for law school success and to develop skills for bar exam success.  These modules can be accessed via the ASP Upper-Level Work TWEN site.

Individual work

The ASP Director does individual work with students on mastering certain skills or tackling particular challenges, such as:

  • Time management
  • Test preparation

To facilitate effective work sessions, students who want to meet individually with Professor Plunkett are asked to schedule meetings. 1Ls should use the sign-up sheet on the ASP 1L Work TWEN site, and upper-level students should use the sign-up sheet on the ASP Upper-Level Work TWEN site. If no slots on the sign-up sheets work for you, please email Professor Plunkett with three days/times you are available to meet.

Panels & other programming

ASP hosts panels and other programming for all students throughout the year on topics such as:

  • Professionalism
  • Wellness
  • Mindfulness
