The LLM/MIP Degree and OPT Will Shape the Future of IP Law

The LLM/MIP Degree and Optional Practical Training (OPT): Shaping the Future of Intellectual Property Law

At the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, the journey from classroom to career is more than just a transition—it's a transformational experience that empowers students to make a significant impact in the world of law. Our alumni have not only excelled in their fields but have also become influential leaders, innovators, and mentors. Often, initial post-graduation employment for international LLM graduates is pursued through Optional Practical Training (OPT), temporary work authorization for international students to gain experience in their field of study while maintaining their F-1 visa status. Through the OPT stories that follow, we celebrate the invaluable education and experiences that help shape the early careers of IP professionals from around the globe.

Victor Kronemberger, Brazil: Bridging Theory and Practice in U.S. Trademark Law

Kronemburger

Victor’s journey at UNH Franklin Pierce led him to an incredible opportunity as a Law Clerk at Sunstein LLP in Boston, Massachusetts during his OPT period. Here, he put into practice the lessons learned during the LLM program. He credits the experience with transforming his understanding of U.S. trademark law and the broader IP ecosystem, in-part due to the prosecution and enforcement work he engaged in with both U.S. and foreign associates around the world. The insights Victor gained into U.S. legal business practices prepared him for success in his home country of Brazil where he says he now has a greater understanding of his clients’ needs. Through networking – supported by his IP professors at Franklin Pierce –and leveraging key events with Franklin Pierce alumni – such as the International Trademark Association Annual Meeting – Victor was able to build professional relationships and secure his position. His biggest takeaway? "Engage actively with faculty, network relentlessly, and seize every opportunity to immerse yourself in the legal landscape and build relationships." Victor's story highlights the importance of hands-on experience and proactive engagement, showing future students how a combination of knowledge and networking can lead to success.
