Please join us on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, as we present the annual Bruce E. Friedman Pro Bono Award to John M. Gasaway Jr. The reception takes place in the IP Center Atrium at the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law, from 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
The award honors a University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law graduate and member of the New Hampshire bar who exemplifies Bruce Friedman’s commitment to representing the indigent through exemplary pro bono service. Professor Friedman was the founder of the law school's civil practice clinic.
The Honorable Charles S. Temple (JD ‘85) will give remarks on Professor Friedman’s legacy. Maggie Florino, DOVE Project Coordinator, Domestic Violence Specialist at 603 Legal Aid, will present this year’s award.

Attorney John M. Gasaway Jr. is a prosecuting attorney at the New Hampshire Department of Safety, focusing his practice on circuit court cases across the entire state.
John graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1997 and moved on to receive his J.D. from University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law in 2002. Since his admittance to the Bar in 2004, he has served the state as a dedicated Assistant County Attorney in Rockingham, Cheshire, and Sullivan Counties; an Assistant Attorney General; and a prosecutor for the Department of Safety. He also worked for a time in Dublin, Ireland, as a Legal Case Officer for the Irish Competition Authority.
Throughout his career, John has been involved as a board member for both a local child advocacy center and the Granite State Children’s Alliance, has taught criminal justice classes within the Community College System of New Hampshire, and currently serves as Treasurer on the board of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
John has consistently shown his dedication to Pro Bono service, even while working in the demanding role of state prosecutor. In his 5 years of service, he has donated nearly 200 hours of his time to Pro Bono as a zealous advocate in assisting survivors of Domestic Violence and Stalking obtain protective orders through the DOVE Project. Additionally, he has used his background in finance to assist clients with tax and IRS issues. John has tirelessly upheld the holistic care model with his Pro Bono work—connecting clients to a plethora of community resources, walking them through every step of their case, and always seeking the highest level of service.
Notably, John has also spearheaded efforts to recruit more prosecutors around the state to join the Pro Bono mission, advising on how to balance prosecutorial duties with impactful volunteer work and encouraging many of his colleagues to connect with 603 Legal Aid. John is a wholehearted proponent, not only of giving back to his community, but continuing to improve upon it and increasing access to justice.
