Kevin J. Carroll Joins Faculty as Field Family Intellectual Property Visiting Assistant Professor
UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law is pleased to announce that Kevin J. Carroll will join the faculty in Fall 2026 as the Field Family Intellectual Property Visiting Assistant Professor.
Professor Carroll brings more than 30 years of experience in patent law and a longstanding connection to the law school community. A graduate of Franklin Pierce Law Center, he has served as an adjunct faculty member since 1996, teaching Patent Practice and Procedure, Patent Law, and Intellectual Property Management across residential and hybrid programs. Over the years, he has played a key role in shaping the practical patent offerings, including helping develop Patent Practice and serving as Acting Director of the Patent Practice and Procedure Program in 2006-2007.
Professor Carroll will be leaving a longstanding position as an equity partner at Secant Intellectual Property Law (formerly, Grossman, Tucker, Perreault & Pfleger, PLLC), where his practice focused on patent prosecution, patent clearances, and intellectual property counseling across a wide range of technologies. Professor Carroll plans to continue practicing law part-time at Secant IP to help him maintain his practice-oriented focus in the classroom. Prior to law school, he worked as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The Field Family Intellectual Property Professorship honors the legacy of Professor Emeritus Thomas G. Field, Jr., a beloved teacher, scholar, and mentor whose impact continues to be felt across the law school community. Professor Field, a former patent examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office, was a founding faculty member of the Franklin Pierce Law Center. He helped develop a practice-oriented IP curriculum focused on producing “practice-ready” patent lawyers. Over more than four decades, he shaped both the school’s IP program and generations of students who regarded him as a teacher and a mentor. Professor Carroll, a former student of Professor Field, credits him as a formative influence on his academic development, legal writing, and career path in intellectual property law.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kevin to this role,” said Interim Dean Courtney Brooks. “His deep expertise, connection to Professor Field, and commitment to the law school make him an exceptional fit for this distinguished position.”
