Growing up as an only child in India, Arvind Madan Mohan, LLM in Intellectual Property ’25 watched his parents closely. His father is a lawyer who completed his legal education as a self-reliant business owner. Recognizing the professionalism that it took him to be successful in both law and business, Mohan was inspired to follow his father’s path.
Although he is a practicing IP attorney in India, Mohan decided to enhance his own opportunities in the profession, and his understanding of international law, by pursuing an LLM in the United States. Mohan chose UNH Franklin Pierce after the school was first recommended to him by an alumnus, mentor, and friend, and then after researching many law schools to see which one best fit with his interests and career goals.
“UNH Franklin Pierce appealed to me because of the balance and variety of courses,”
Mohan explains, noting that he has particularly enjoyed learning about professional sports law from Professor Mike McCann. “I understood that it offers such a wide area of study than just the core IP that I was introduced to at home. That variety and the balance of fee structure, in the sense that it was a more affordable option, helped me make the decision.”
Determined to be independent in paying for his schooling, Mohan was pleased to learn that he was selected as the recipient of the $5,000 Royzz & Co. International Student Scholarship for LLM candidates admitted to UNH Franklin Pierce’s IP graduate program. The scholarship, Mohan says, aligns well with his personal values of paying his own way, along with his career development goals. He’s grateful to Royzz & Co. and to all those who have helped him so far.
“People [at UNH Franklin Pierce] are actually invested in who you are and what you want to achieve,” he says. “I’m genuinely very thankful for that.”
In India, Mohan received his LL.B. (Hons.) from the School of Law at Christ University in Bangalore. Prior to joining the UNH Franklin Pierce community, he worked as a junior associate at Daniel & Gladys, where he represented clients in IP-related matters, including trademarks and patents, before the Madras High Court and City Civil Courts. In coming to the U.S. to further his legal education, Mohan hopes to build on his foundational knowledge, join an AM Law 100 firm, and eventually establish his own international practice that extends not only between the U.S. and India, but across the globe.
Mohan first became interested in IP law through his appreciation for art and self-expression. As a child, he was introduced to different forms of art, and the idea of helping to protect art and artists through IP greatly appealed to him.
“That knowledge, that I could help protect art, really reinforced my interest in IP,” he says.
Since arriving in Concord, Mohan has quickly grown to appreciate the international perspectives of his classmates and professors, who already have helped to broaden his understanding of the law. He’s hopeful that those connections, coupled with earning his LLM in the U.S., will give him a stronger foundation in American and global legal systems once he establishes himself in his own legal practice.
“I have classmates from Ghana, Kenya, Panama, and Columbia, in addition to India and the U.S.,” he says. “They have different perspectives from their own upbringings, and it’s not just a moral standpoint, but how they interpret certain situations, how they see through their difficulties. It’s one thing to read about it, but in person it is a true pleasure to be among these brilliant minds.”
UNH Franklin Pierce will accept applications for the Royzz & Co. International Student Scholarship until April 1, 2025. Applicants for the residential LLM or master’s in Intellectual Property are invited to apply. You can learn more here or contact admissions@law.uh.edu.
