As a child, Lavanya G T was constantly inspired by the commitment of her father, who served more than 21 years in the Indian Army. With the support of her parents, last year Lavanya became the first in her family to graduate law college. She is now poised to earn an international master’s degree.
“Witnessing his unwavering commitment to duty, selflessness, and dedication to the country inspired me deeply,” says Lavanya, who began her pursuit of an LL.M. at UNH Franklin Pierce this fall. “My father’s remarkable service to the country instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility toward making a positive impact on society and it is this inspiration that ultimately led me to pursue a career in the legal profession.”
Thanks to her own hard work, Lavanya was selected as the 2023-24 recipient of the International Student Scholarship sponsored by Royzz and Co. The annual award provides one $5,000 scholarship to an international student admitted to the law school’s LL.M. program in intellectual property or its master in intellectual property program. Lavanya wrote a 500-word essay as part of the application process.
“Without this scholarship,” she says, “I wouldn’t even think about pursuing an international degree.”
After earning her B.B.A.-LL.B.(Hons.) at Christ University School of Law in Bengaluru, India, in May 2022, Lavanya felt that pursuing an American LL.M. would help her expand her perspective and understanding of IP law on a global scale. She also hopes to gain a strong foundation in the concepts of global prosecution of IP cases.
“The American LL.M. degree is well structured, with equal importance on theoretical
knowledge and strong practical skills,” Lavanya says. She adds that the opportunity to study at UNH Franklin Pierce presents a chance to “further expand my knowledge and interest in intellectual property law and its interface with other fields.” The comprehensive curriculum at the law school, its specialization in IP law, its collaborative environment, world-class faculty, and strong alumni network were all draws for Lavanya as she researched American law schools.
“From the moment I learned about UNH Franklin Pierce, I was captivated by the institution’s rich history, esteemed faculty, and the vibrant academic community it fosters,” Lavanya adds. “The Royzz scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies.”
Since her August arrival in Concord, Lavanya has been impressed by the available research resources; the variety of student organizations and law clinics that have allowed her to gain practical experience while giving back to the community; the rich cultural diversity that exists on campus; the inclusivity; and the vast student support services. Lavanya notes that all of those factors have made her transition to a new environment smoother and more comfortable.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to study here,” Lavanya adds, praising the law school’s ability to offer an outstanding legal education, while cultivating a sense of community and belonging. “From day one, the warm and welcoming environment provided me with assurance that I had made the right decision to pursue my master’s here. The support I have received has been remarkable. I am excited about the knowledge I will continue to gain, the friendships I have made, and the experiences that still lie ahead. I am determined to make the most of my time here and contribute positively to the legal community.”
